Not able to play Native DSD

Post by Lavi Jaat 1232 » Fri Apr 10, 2020 11:19 am

I installed Neutron Music Player on my Redmi K20 (Mi 9T) and tried to play a DSD64 file but it converted it into PCM. So I turned DSD over PCM on but after turning it on I only heard very faint music buried under a lot of noise. My device supports Native DSD64 and DSD128.

Some devices support DOP (DSD over PCM), some don't. Hearing very faint music buried under a lot of noise shows that the device doesn't support DOP or that there's a bug in the app. I suggest you contact neutronmp@gmail.com and ask the developer whether it should work with the Redmi K20 (Mi 9T) .

FAQ: What is DoP (DSD over PCM)?
The original idea for DoP was invented by dCS in 2011. It involves taking groups of 16 adjacent 1-bit samples from a DSD stream and packing them into the lower 16 bits of a 24/176.4 data stream. Data from the other channel of the stereo pair is packed the same way. A specific marker code in the top 8 bits identifies the data stream as DoP, rather than PCM. The resulting DoP stream can be transmitted through existing 24/192-capable USB, AES, Dual AES or SPDIF interfaces to a DoP-compatible DAC, which reassembles the original stereo DSD data stream COMPLETELY UNCHANGED.

If something goes wrong and the data stream is decoded as PCM, the output will be low-level noise with faint music in the back ground, so it fails safely. This can happen if the computer erases the marker code by applying a volume adjustment.

I know a user who experienced the same problem on his S9+. I think it's a problem with the app. Developers should try to fix it as soon as possible.

On the S9 it is not supposed to work. Or so the developer says.

I have contacted the developers with email. I hope that they will respond.

The developers responded and asked me to install the Dev version of Neutron to collect logs. I hope that they will find the issue.

No. My phone's firmware is not giving access to Native DSD Stream of the DAC.
