You wrote "There are no known devices which support Hi-Res Audio output with 32-bit floating point format and thus make sure 32-bit Output (IEEE 754) is switched off".

I'm using Samsung S7 SM-G930F with Oreo 8.0.0 and Neutron 2.08.1-ARM64 with wired headphones.
I use "Generic Driver" and have enabled "32-bit Output (IEEE 754)".
I can choose a frequency of 192 kHz, then the Info in the Playing Now Screen shows "32-bit fp 192 kHz Stereo PCM".

I've got two questions :
- am I right to assume that high-res is working ?
- am I right to assume that dither isn't necessary with 32 bit output ?

"How to check Hi-Res Audio is available
If you wish to to know whether your device has Hi-Res Audio support just access Audio Hardware -> Frequency section. Hi-Res Audio capable devices will have multiple frequencies listed, Bits field will show 24 or 8.24 or 32 in [out: X] placeholder. Additionally you can tap on a panel with Channels, Bits in Audio Hardware and see the current audio output format. If all audio devices indicate 'closed' during playback then it is a sign of Hi-Res Audio as well."

Actually, this works on my tablet (Lenovo Tab4 10 Plus) and shows all as closed, but on my phone (ASUS ZenFone 3) it does nothing...

Hey guys,

So, I just bought Neutron and I'm having trouble getting a 96/24 output. It seems like it's limited to 48/24. Any idea why and if there's a fix? I can't enjoy most of my FLACs because of that and I don't know what else to do.

Cheers!

You read the posts here and configured your settings accordingly ?
To make sure you have guaranteed Hi-Res Audio output (if device supports it) there are number of prerequisites in Neutron's settings -> Audio Hardware:

1) Generic Driver = ON
2) Generic Driver -> Hi-Res Codec = ON
3) Generic Driver -> Hi-Res Speaker = ON
4) DSP Effect (Device) = OFF
5) Low Latency = OFF
6) 32-bit Output (IEEE 754) = OFF

The easiest approach is just to reset all settings of Audio Hardware section to default (middle Undo button in the bottom of dialog).

Hello, thank you for the quick reply!

Yes, I made sure those settings were selected and I'm 99% sure my device supports Hi-Res. It's a Samsung Galaxy S10 (Exynos) and I'm using my IEMs connected to the headphone jack. I'm playing a 96/24 FLAC and it downsamples to 48/24 for some reason.

Any idea of what might be going on or if there is a fix? I really didn't want to throw €7.5 down the drain and, other than this, I'm loving the player (mainly it's EQ capabilities) :(

Silly question, but you don't have the choice for a higher frequency ?
And you know that you get 48 kHz from the info below the seekbar ?

I do have a choice if I disable "Follow Source Frequency", but it's only 48 and 192, nothing in the middle. Shouldn't there be more options? Because, if I select 192, Neutron will upsample my files with no need. I checked, 96/24 files start playing at 192/24. I just want them to play at whatever they actually are.

Also, yes, I checked using the information below the seekbar. It shows 24-bit, 96 kHz, 4.6 Mbps and FLAC when showing the file info and 24-bit, 48 kHz, Stereo and PCM when showing what's outputting. Also, on the top of the Audio Hardware window while playing, the info under Frequency is 48000 when it should be 96000.

Ok, so it DOES work. Sorry, but you won't get more choices with Samsung on Pie.
Have a look at the PowerAmp forum, they've got similar problems there :

The problem isn't caused by the music player apps, but by Samsungs's implementation of Android's sound interface.
My personal opinion : don't worry, upsample to 192 kHz, your device has more than enough processing power for that.
My very personal opinion : don't worry at all, use 48 Khz, nobody hears the difference anyway.

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you so much for getting to the bottom of the issue. Do you think forcing 96/24 would make it output at that quality? If not, I will simply let it upsample the file.

No, it won't. Samsung's version of Pie doesn't support 96 kHz. It cannot just take it as it is.
It will take take it, but then either up- or downsample it using its own mechanism for this.
If you want to make sure that a higher frequency is used and the upsampling is done by Neutron,
let Neutron upsample and put out a supported sampling rate, then the os will take this.
