ReplayGain tutorial?

Hi,

I have a lot of music files with different volume levels. I read that Neutron MP normalization can fix this by making all the volumes the same using ReplayGain. My first question is: does Neutron's normalization actually use ReplayGain for best sound quality, or is it just a typical volume normalization? Second, how do I actually do it?

Thanks!

If you long-press the 'Normalization' button, the program will explain in more detail what is happening. It mentions that the normalization data is held in the database, and the file is not modified. I remember Replay Gain being a value in the file itself, so it can be used by any capable program. Neutron can use Replay Gain, but I think it doesn't figure those values out. The process Neutron uses is called 'Bind EQ' and it (for some reason) disables EQ adjustment when the song is normalized.

Select what you want to process (album or folder) and decide on an EQ setting. Long-press on an album or a folder and select 'BIND EQ' - Then a button labeled 'NORMALIZE' will appear. Select it and choose what files you want to process. You can unbind them, also.

I did that, and while it seemed to have worked for about 3/4 of my music files (they are roughly the same volume), the other 1/4 is still substantially louder than the rest. How do I choose the volume to which Neutron normalizes the files to?

There are different normalization strategies. Neutron is normalizing gain to avoiding overloaded audio, e.g. truncation of peaks. This is done to provide widest possible dynamic range that will increase quality. But, you would like to increase loudness of the tracks. Neutron does not do that but you could try any Replay Gain analyzing software (for example, Foobar2000) which is capable of analyzing Replay Gain in the manner you described and writing its value into metadata of music files. Your collection in this way will be universal and playing as expected on all players which support RG from metadata.

I love Neutron but am still figuring it out. One thing I am not sure on: In order to use Replay Gain, do I have to Normalize everything first? Or does Replay Gain just work on it's own without doing anything else first?
