Android Auto Sound Bug

Post by kshoop1958 » Wed Nov 27, 2019 2:21 pm

First off, I love the player and it works fine in my home. But I'm having an issue with the sound from NMP starting and stopping when using android auto in my car. I have a Moto Z2 Play that has been updated to Android 8.0.0 and I have version 2.12.9 of NMP. What happens is that the sound from the song playing on NMP only comes over the car speakers when Google Maps is making an announcement like "turn left in 200 feet". Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and please let me know if further info is required.

Does it work when you don't use Google Maps at all ?

Good question Blaubar. I tried, and it doesn't play at all when Google maps is off. FYI, everything works fine when I connect via Bluetooth and don't use Android Auto. There must be some sort of conflict on the signal with Android Auto, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

I've got neither car nor AA, so I'll have to guess : that must be a problem of the configuration of the AA app(s) on your phone ( there are two apps in the playstore, AA Google Maps and AA For Smartphones, you've got one of them, or both ? ) and/or the headunit.

So, the car is a 2017 Ford Escape with the original factory "Sync 3" head unit with an 8" touchscreen. On my phone I have Android Auto version 4.8.594323-release and Google Maps version 10.30.2. Additional AA apps installed on my phone are Google Play Music, LiveXLive, MLB At Bat, Pandora, Podcasts, TuneIn Radio, and VLC.

So you count VLC as an Android Auto app - what happens if you play music via VLC and Android Auto ? The same problem ?

Actually no, VLC delivers sound. I just discovered something interesting with NMP though, after trying that. My phone shows NMP volume is all the way up, and the equalizer is acting like the song is playing, but the car volume won't turn up. It seems like the car volume is stuck on zero and I can't get it to turn up using the car's volume controls. The only thing that happens when I try to turn up the volume using the car's volume control is a popup appears on the head unit touchscreen that says "Audio Volume Minimum" with a big 0 in the middle. I really appreciate the help and tips!

So what happens if you check and change the volume on your smartphone while (trying to :D) playing via AA ? We've got 3 volume controls in NMP : preamp, gain after eq, hardware gain. Preamp should be normal, otherwise you'd see the missing volume in the spectrum on the eq screen. But perhaps one of the other two is set low ?

... and one last idea : does it make a difference if you connect via USB or bluetooth ?

Well, I can't find any problem with the volume levels, even though I'm only able to find a slider in 2 places. Regarding a Bluetooth connection, I can't seem to start Android Auto on my head unit unless a USB cable is used. The funny thing about all of this is that NMP works flawlessly with or without Google maps as long as I don't use Android Auto, and just connect my phone via the car's Bluetooth connection. Pretty frustrating really, because Android Auto is a nice car feature. I guess I'll just keep using NMP via the car's Bluetooth connection instead of using Android Auto, because I do enjoy the sound quality. Thanks for all of your help!
